The 2005 and 2006 Jeep Wrangler TJ models have an issue with the fuel system. The fuel tank has a valve called the ICV that gets stuck and there is no way to fix it. It is a flaw in the design of the tank. This stuck valve causes the fuel to not react correctly when the fuel reaches the full point and doesn't trigger the pump correctly to stop the fuel from pumping. This causes the pump to keep pumping and spews fuel out onto the side of your Jeep Wrangler and on to the ground.

So far there has not been any corrective action taken by Jeep to fix this issue for our model years. They have however fixed other model years with the same problem. The fix requires a completely new tank with a better designed ICV valve. Currently you can buy a new tank for your Wrangler but it will cost somewhere around $900 and it is the same poorly designed tank you already have.

There has been a class action lawsuit filed sometime at the end of 2011. I will update the results of this lawsuit as I hear about it and post it here on this page.

We need to be proactive and complain about this issue so it gets the recognition it needs to be taken care of. You can file a complaint on this website: Safecar.gov

With the help of all those with this problem we can hopefully get Jeep to take accountability for their poor design and fix our issue. It is only a matter of time before this is the cause of a major catastrophe.

As for now... there is a work around for this issue. It is not perfect but it is helpful. Since most gas stations have an abundance of paper towels at each pump, you can use them to help reduce this issue. Follow the instructions below.

  • Insert the pump into your tank.
  • Stuff plenty of paper towels around the nozzle to cut off the pathway of gas to escape the tank
  • Start pumping as usual
This should help with this problem. Also, you can monitor the gas filling up and cut it off before it overflows manually. Other than these ideas, there isn't much you can do.
